Types of Window Treatments

Window treatments can be classified into 3 major categories:

  1. Hard window treatments – These are made using hard materials such as vinyl and wood. Window shutters and blinds are good examples of hard window treatments.

  1. Soft window treatments – These are made using soft material fabrics like linen, silk, or polyester. Good examples of soft window treatments include curtains, sheers, drapes, swags, valances, and roman shades.

  1. Layered window treatment – this is a combination of both hard and soft window treatments.

Below we will delve even further into describing the various window treatment options. There are many choices available, so we’ve compiled a guide that will equip you with all the knowledge you need to come up with your own window treatment ideas.

Window Shutters

Shutters are employed to serve a wide range of services which may including regulating sunlight intensity entering the room, enhancing privacy, providing security, or for simply aesthetic purposes. Window shutters are a general term used for both interior and exterior window shutters.

Woven Wood Shades

Often referred to as bamboo or matchsticks shades, woven wood shades can give your home a natural and exotic look. They can be used with a variety of decorating styles for the purpose of adding natural color and texture using materials such as grasses, exotic reeds, and woods.

Cellular Shades

Cellular shades use a specific honeycomb design that naturally insulates the house while maximizing energy efficiency. The cell shapes functions to trap air in a barrier between the room and the window surface. Cellular shades come in single, double, or triple cell options depending on your preference. In addition, they come in a variety of light control levels ranging from light filtering to blackout. They are made from soft paper or cloth-like material, unlike window blinds which are made up of tough materials. Bonded polyester and spun lace can also be used.

Pleated Blinds

Pleated blinds are manufactured from a pleated material that is capable of sitting flat with the window whenever it is pulled up to the top, obscuring them from sight when the blinds are opened. It is worth knowing that both cellular and pleated blinds are manufactured in Top Down-Bottom up blinds, which can be raised from the bottom or lowered from the top so that you can stack your window covering in any position.

Venetian blinds

Venetian Blinds are manufactured from either metal, wood, or plastic. They are suspended by cords in such a manner that the slats are easily rotated by 180 degrees. When these slats are rotated, they overlap with one another to block out the light. The slats can be rotated by various degrees, allowing for precise light control.

Vertical blinds

Standing vertically, these blinds have the advantage of accumulating little to no dust, unlike their horizontal counterparts. They are always drawn to the side and operate most efficiently on windows and doors that slide from side to side. Their operation is faster for sliding doors and requires much less energy to use. These blinds work perfectly for patio doors and extremely wide windows.

Fabric Blinds

These blinds are generally less noisy and provide better insulation from the sun as well as protection from wind chill. Fabric blinds come in fabric, embossed PVC, flat plastic, and S-curved slats. Doorways in public spaces can also be fitted with these blinds to maintain the indoor warmth, as well as prevent insects from entering.

Shoji Panels

These are common in Japanese decor and can be alternatively used as doors, room dividers, or window coverings. These panels are manufactured from bamboo or other types of wood with a translucent rice paper that has the properties of being both porous and transparent. Alternatively, it can be used as a folding screen. They come in a variety of designs and can be made by a wide range of materials.

Panel Track

Also known as a sliding window panel, these are made of flat hanging fabric that folds into pleats when raised. This window treatment can be applied to picture windows and sliding doors to provide a simple, stylish, and versatile solution.

Roman Shades

Roman shades consist of a solid piece of a fabric that folds into horizontal pleats when raised and hangs flat against the window when closed. It suits a variety of needs such as insulation, light control, and privacy. You are able to adjust the covered portion of the window using a cord mechanism. Roman shades come in a variety of colors and patterns. You also have the choice between a flat styled Roman shade or a hobbled style which is distinguished by its cascading pleated fabric.

Also known as curtains, drapery is used to give a casually elegant look. It has the option to remain stationary on either one or both sides of the window or can be drawn and closed across the support rod. Curtains vary in size, material, color, shape, and pattern. There is a huge variety of curtains that are easily accessible for purchase. Some can repel oil and dust, resist fires, prevent UV light deterioration, and are designed with cleanability and lifespan in mind. They can be adjusted using cords, hand, press-button pads, or remote-controlled computers. Curtain selection for different windows will depend on the window size, the particular type of desired curtain, and weight.

Sheer curtains

This is manufactured from sheer fabric. The translucence of the fabric is determined by three main qualities which include being very thin, see-through, and barely visible. Silk, nylon, gossamer, and rayon fit the above 3 qualities. Some people refer to them as privacy curtains as they allow you to peep through them from inside but deter the people outside from looking in.

Café curtains

These are horizontal curtains that hang from rings that slide along a rod. Café curtains can cover just the lower half or entirety of the window. This is great if you want to easily peep outside a room or booth, but want to maintain some privacy.
